According to ISRO, the $54.64 million Mangalyaan mission has now reached the end of its life. The Mars Orbiter, however, remained in service for eight years before it beamed final goodbye to earthlings from its Martian Orbit.
Due to a prolonged eclipse in April 2022 that caused the orbiter’s batteries to run out, the ground station lost contact with it. According to scientists, Mangalyaan’s propellant must have run out because it was unable to maintain the “desired altitude pointing” necessary for power generation.
We must keep in mind that the Mangalyaan craft was a historic accomplishment for the nation as we pay homage to it. India made history in September 2014 when with Mangalyaan, India became the first country in the world to orbit Mars on its initial attempt. What also surprised the entire world was that the Mars mission was accomplished by ISRO in a budget that was less than that of a Hollywood film.
This is how netizens reacted to this feat;
Designed to last for just 6 months, Mangalyaan has finally met its inevitable demise 8 years after it made history by successfully entering Martian orbit. Rest in peace. #Mangalyaan#ISROpic.twitter.com/DX0AWPikon
One user appreciated the efforts on India’s scientific community.
#Mangalyaan quietly bids goodbye. India's best innovation and world's cheapest yet best performing Mars Orbiter has run out of fuel. It is the result of our phenomenal scientific minds that it served for 8 years, way beyond its design life of 6 months. pic.twitter.com/1mhVQC1eW0

The Orbiter survived in the Martian orbit for almost eight years despite being built as a technological demonstrator with a planned lifetime of six months.
