The Indian Road Transport and Highways Ministry is considering several options to completely automate the country’s highway toll collection system. The implementation of a GPS based toll collection system and a new number plate is currently a topic of discussion within the ministry and the government.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, said that the country has an RFID based toll collection system in force currently, which is facilitated by FASTag stickers on the cars and FASTag scanners on toll booths.

However, now the ministry is considering a GPS based toll collection system, whereby the movement of the cars will be tracked by satellites and the toll will be collected based on the toll road usage.

Work on the technology of making a new type of number plate has already started. Eventually it will be mandatory for all car manufacturers to put this number plate.

All the old number plates will also be replaced with new ones which will have a built in GPS system. A software will be encoded into the number plate, from which toll will be deducted automatically.

Benefits of GPS based highway toll collection

This new system boasts of getting rid of highway toll plazas completely and save a lot of time and fuel for drivers on the highway. The toll collection will be based on the number of kilometers of highway usage, thus bringing down the toll charges for drivers using the highways for a short distance.

Currently if they use a particular stretch of the highway, they have to pay full toll applicable between two toll booths within which the driver has used the highway.
